Guanaqueros
Guanaqueros is a charming small coastal village in Chile’s coastal desert, where the arid landscape meets the sea in spectacular fashion.
The surrounding area harbors some relevant wetlands, providing critical habitat for shorebirds, but also a powerful upwelling system brings cold, nutrient-rich waters to the surface, fueling a productive marine ecosystem along the Pacific coast. The town is located less than one hour south of La Serena and four hours from Santiago, where International flights arrive.
The coastal town of Guanaqueros and the surrounding region is home to a diverse array of habitats—from productive coastlines to arid upland sites—each teeming with abundant birdlife. You should have no trouble finding locally common White-throated Tapaculos (Scelorchilus albicollis), resident and migrant shorebirds such as the Blackish Oystercatcher (Haematopus ater) or even groups of Humboldt Penguins (Spheniscus humboldti).
